Costa Rica

GEMS Costa Rica Experience revolves around understanding the bio-diversity of Costa Rica and the rainforest ecology.  With the help of our sponsor school, Cenit (located in Liberia, Costa Rica), GEMS students are immersed into the culture and the language through student partners.

Members of the GEMS senior class had the opportunity in November 2017 to travel to Costa Rica. GEMS students spent 13 days in 4 different environmental zones that Costa Rica had to offer.  From horseback riding to walking the hanging bridges in a tropical wet forest, these seniors learned to face our fears and find ways to cope with them. Students witnessed how schools are run in the country, as well as comparing the differences and similarities between private and public schools.

GEMS seniors had an opportunity to reflect on their experience from their personal perspective and contribute to seminar discussions surrounding topics such as poverty, infrastructure, mass productivity, ecology and culture.  This experience was a life changing one for our seniors.

GEMS students hiked through the rainforest along the Rio de Celeste and learned about a large variety of vegetation and animals indigenous to the region, visited the largest butterfly garden in Central America and swam in the hot springs!  GEMS students toured sugar cane and cocoa plantations and even had the opportunity to try to press the sugar canes and extract its juices - that's hard work!

GEMS students learned that it takes about 40 minutes to fill a container of picked coffee beans, but that container is only worth a $2.00 income.
