Europe (Italy & Poland)

GEMS students have traveled throughout Europe including Italy, Ireland, Poland and France.

Rome and Poland
GEMS offered our Italy & Poland Experience as part of an Art History Summer Experience. Students and staff traveled to Rome, Italy and Warsaw, Poland where they took part in a rigorous exploration of architecture, art, culture, and history.

The Italy portion included several walks through the ruins of the Roman Empire including; Circus Maximus, The Colosseum, Nero's Garden's, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and several other awe inspiring sights.  Also included was an in depth tour of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.  We also venture off to Monte Casino and the ash encased ruins of Pompeii.  Students were required to do pre-reading as well as assignments before attending this trip.

The experience then turned north for Poland.  The students and staff Spent time in Krakow experiencing the culture of eastern Europe including an exciting day at Wieliczka Salt Mine.  The group also visited Auschwitz and Birkenau.  The students pulled from their pre-reading of Primo Levi and looked to find and analyze the places and scenarios he wrote about of his experiences in the concentration camp.
